Effective problem-solving in complex IT environments requires a deep understanding of data integrity and system interconnectivity, enabling structured and informed decision-making.

Through both my coursework and internship experiences, I developed a comprehensive understanding of how crucial data integrity and system interconnectivity are in large-scale information technology environments. My academic experience in ITEC 570, Database Management and Administration, introduced me to the fundamental concepts of relational databases, SQL, and particularly, the principle of data integrity—ensuring accuracy, completeness, consistency, and validity of organizational data across diverse systems. The course provided practical training in Oracle Database, where I learned to create, manipulate, and maintain complex data sets through SQL queries, and understood the significance of clearly defining relationships with primary and foreign keys to maintain data consistency and reliability. We learn this knowledge by doing a variety of tasks to strengthen our understandings, such as group projects, using real-world application like Oracle Database, and many assignments. Learning about database is essential for all the IT students since all computer application requires database to store data to function.

Dominion Energy operates based on a variety of systems. These systems power the company and the whole state of South Carolina to provide sufficient utility. 

This picture describes one of the operation unit that rely on a large software to be deployed for maintaining for field workers. 

I was learning about how Outage Management System is connecting with the maintenance truck by being at the training field. This gives me a solid idea of what this is instead of sitting at office and learning about concuptal knowledge.   

 TMy internship experience as a business technology analyst intern at Dominion Energy ,during the summer of junior into senior year, significantly deepened this understanding. At Dominion, I undertook a project mapping critical systems used in managing utilities and energy resources, such as the Customer Information System (CIS), Outage Management System (OMS), and Geographic Information System (GIS). Each of these systems continuously interacts with numerous databases, exchanging critical operational data. A core aspect of my role involved documenting these data flows and communications between systems, which was previously inadequately documented. This work underscored the real-world importance of data integrity; I learned firsthand that discrepancies or inconsistencies in data could cause substantial operational issues. For instance, inconsistencies between CIS and OMS data could slow outage response times, potentially affecting thousands of customers.

The classroom concepts from ITEC 570 directly informed my approach at Dominion Energy. The concept of relational database, from connection different tables of data to one another, allows me to understand quickly what the company’s current workflow is. Without the structured understanding of relational databases and data integrity, I would have struggled to effectively document complex data flows and system interactions. Complex data flows exist in every big companies, this experience help me see the importance of data integrity and system connectivity by talking to many Subject Mater Experts in each system. For example, I talked to an expert in the Outage Management System, learning about how Dominion manage its outage with field workers to maintain the grid working. The experience shows the importance of maintaining high data standards and systematic documentation, which significantly reduced inefficiencies and unnecessary repetitive communication with subject matter experts. 

Reflecting on this experience, I now recognize that data integrity is foundational for successful technology solutions, influencing not just technical outcomes but also operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. As I advance in my career, I will prioritize data integrity and thorough documentation when addressing technical problems for my future companies, understanding clearly that maintaining reliable, accurate data across interconnected systems is essential for effective operations and decision-making.
